Haitian-American
Leadership Council (HALEC) is an independent,
non-profit and national organization founded
in November 2003. It is registered and
operational in six (6) states: Massachusetts,
Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland
and Florida. It primary objective is to unify
and empower the
Haitian community in the United States under
a collective umbrella that reflects our social,
political aspirations and needs as a community.
To meet this objective, HALEC will:
- Assimilate the Haitian-American community
to the American democracy
- Promote civic betterment
- Promote economic empowerment within the Haitian
community.
- Expand and defend legal rights of all individuals
of
Haitian origin.
- Unify the political voice of all Haitians
and individuals of Haitian descent under a
collective umbrella.
- Educate and register every eligible Haitian-American
to participate in local, state and presidential
elections.
As a minority group, our votes are taken for
granted. We have no leaders fighting for our
interests/rights at the municipal, state and
federal levels. By uniting our votes and speaking
with a united voice, we will face our challenges
together and we will have a
greater visibility as a community. In addition,
we will be able to influence the policy of
the United States. As stated in the Haitian
flag "L'union fait la force", it
behooves us to unify because we can make a
difference as a community only and only if
we are unified. HALEC's board members strongly
believe that we need to formulate a structure
by which we can start planting seeds of hope
for the next generation to grow and prosper.
